Chiefly personal and business correspondence re Lucas's service as a member of the board of trustees of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co.; board of visitors of the South Carolina Military Acasdemy [Citadel], and board of trustees of Porter Military Academy (Charleston, S.C.), his involvement in politics as a candidate for U.S. Congress on the anti-Tillman platform, 1892, and as an applicant for collector of internal revenue, 1892-1893. Other items discuss his involvement in affairs of the Episcopal church, particularly Trinity Church (Society Hill, S.C.); family letters of Lucas' wife, Caroline (Carrie) McIver (1834-1901), their children, Thomas Smith (1863-1939), Frances (Fannie) McIver Lucas Wilkes (d. 1944), James Jonathan (Jon), Jr. (1866-1901), Benjamin Simons (1868-1938), Elizabeth Wilds Lucas McIver (1872-1948), Mary McIver Lucas (d. 1914), and Melita (Lita) Eleanor (1877-1907), and J.J. Lucas's brothers, Benjamin Simons (1833-1915), Thomas Ephraim (1836-1920), and Simons D., and others. Includes letters, 1894-1903, from Martin Ernst, Vineland, N.J., advising Lucas re alternative agricultural practices and products as well as sources of farm labor; business papers re settlement of estate of Henry H. Bacot and Dr. Benjamin Simons Lucas (1804-1890); and miscellaneous items re maintenance and removal of a bridge across the Great Pee Dee River owned by Societey Hill and Marlboro Bridge Co. Receipts for the sale of cotton by Lucas and Dr. Thomas Smith from Adams Frost & Co., Brown Shipley & Co., and Adams Cotton Co.; various issues of Adams Cotton Co.'s "Weekly Cotton Circular"; notices of stockholders meetings from The People's Bank of Darlington; and miscellaneous items re Bennettsville & Cheraw Railroad, Blue Ridge Railway Co., Hampton and Branchville Railroad and Lumber Co., Union & Glenn Springs Railroad Co., Alcolu Railroad Co., and North Western Rail Road Co.
